Colic is an integral part of early motherhood. It is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that most often occurs at the very beginning of infancy. We can usually observe it already between the 2-3rd week of the baby's life and the gradual disappearance of colic occurs around the 4-5th month. Colic is the result of the baby struggling, most often in the late afternoon or evening, right after eating. A baby's hard and tense belly causes it to curl its legs, clench its fists and cry.
A colic attack may last from several minutes to several hours. Unfortunately, no one has yet invented an effective cure for this disease. Relief is only provided by pooping or passing gas. However, we, parents, can help our baby at least a little. During colic, a warm compress on the belly works great as it has a relaxing and antispasmodic effect. The compress can be a freshly ironed diaper or a special hot water bottle. A hot water bottle with cherry pits is a much safer solution than a hot water bottle with warm water. Heated cherry pits have excellent thermal properties, thanks to which they maintain the appropriate temperature for a long time. To give your baby a warm compress, place him in the fetal position. The baby will feel comfortable and safe, and the fetal position makes it easier to get rid of gases.
